News – St. Pete named top design destination by Architectural Digest

International design magazine Architectural Digest has named St. Petersburg one of the top five global destinations to visit in December.

“This December take some time to explore one of the year’s hottest destinations,” Laura Itzkowitz writes in the piece, which also highlights Havana in Cuba, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Berlin in Germany and San Sebastián in Spain.

“This small city has been making big strides in the arts,” Itzkowitz says of St. Pete before focusing on the street art murals downtown and the Dali Museum’s new Frida Kahlo exhibit – opening December 17.

Forget booking a plane ticket to experience these internationally coveted cities – we live in one of them! All you need is a spare afternoon, a Coast bike and our handy dandy guide to Architectural Digest’s must-sees in The Burg.

1. The Dali Museum

Housing 2,000 works of art in 20,000 square feet of gallery space, it’s always a pleasure to visit this iconic St. Pete attraction. As highlighted by Architectural Digest, from December 17 – April 17, the museum will host Frida Kahlo at The Dali, showcasing the extraordinary career and life of the acclaimed 20th century Mexican artist.

2. The Canopy at The Birchwood

Architectural Digest selected The Birchwood as the best place to bed down in the city. As locals, we can make use of The Canopy – the hotel’s rooftop lounge and bar. Cabanas, firepits, living room seating and a spectacular view of the waterfront … it’s a hard life, eh?

3. St. Pete Murals

Downtown has received widespread media accolades for its vibrant mural scene and Architectural Digest listed the 30 recently-commissioned pieces of street art as a top reason to visit. Coast Program Director Eric Trull compiled an hour-long tour of some of his favorite murals around town which, while spaced out, are easily accessible by bike. He’s nice like that.

4. The Chihuly Collection at The Morean Arts Center

A stunning, permanent collection of world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly’s unique artwork has found a new home and is a must-visit for visitors and locals alike. Architectural Digest was particularly impressed with the new expanded collection, but you can still see old favorites like Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier, Niijima Floats, Persians and Tumbleweeds, too.
