FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
It’s no secret that St. Pete is a city of bike lovers. Heck, we even have the merchandise to prove it. Shirts aside, with the official launch of Coast Bike Share on Saturday, February 4, access to bikes in The Burg is about to get a whole lot more convenient.
Coast Bike Share’s St. Pete launch event will kick off at City Hall at 8:30am on Saturday with opening speeches and Kahwa coffee, before cycle-loving city residents take to the streets for a community ride through downtown and along the waterfront. The ride will be led by Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin and City Council members, culminating with a crowd ribbon cutting as the group coasts through the opening of Localtopia.
The route includes biking on main roads, so is not recommended for small children, but riders are welcome to bring their own bikes, or they can grab a Coast bike from one of the newly installed hub stations around town.
The full bike share program roll out welcomes 300 blue bikes to 30 hub stations around downtown. Riders can choose from a variety of options to suit their needs including Pay-As-You-Go – picking up and dropping off bikes as they need to for $8 per hour – or a $15 monthly membership, which comes with 60 minutes of daily ride time. Residents can also purchase a $79 annual membership – $59 for students – for 60 minutes of daily ride time.
The official launch follows the hugely successful demo system, which went live on November 1, 2016, and saw 100 demo bikes hit 10 stations downtown to coincide with the Cross-Bay Ferry launch.
In the first 90 days, St. Pete has achieved over 12,000 miles ridden and 4,400 trips. This equates to 480,000 calories burned by riders. Those choosing to bike instead of drive for those 12,000 miles have also reduced a whopping 10,560lbs of carbon.
8:30am – Meet at City Hall (175 5th St N, St. Petersburg, FL 33701) for speeches and coffee.
8:45am – Coast through downtown and along the waterfront’s Healthy St. Pete Loop.
10:00am – Bike through the official Coast Bike Share ribbon for the opening of Localtopia.
10:00 – 5:00pm – Enjoy the Localtopia festivities with hundreds of local vendors, artists, and musicians. Stick around the Coast booth (on the corner of 2nd Ave N and 3rd St N) for a chance to win ride credits, swag, and epic hi-fives!
