Coast Bike Share launched in Tampa two years ago today!
More than 300 people took part in the official roll out on December 6 2014, which kicked off at Water Works Park in historic Tampa Heights, making us feel all warm inside.
Coast Director Eric Trull and Mayor Bob Buckhorn were joined by some of our favourite Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla pirates, The Tampa Bay Lightning Girls, Thunderbug, and hundreds of city residents on a community ride to historic Ybor City, escorted by Tampa Police. The celebrations continued throughout the afternoon with live entertainment presented by Rock the Park, including Fowlers Bluff and The Tattered Saints, and local food trucks on hand to keep riders fueled.
You know how to get down, Tampa.
Since then, we’ve installed 33 smart bike hubs at convenient locations around town, and people have used Coast Bikes to take over 100,000 trips, travelling almost 300,000 miles. That’s the equivalent of biking around the equator a whopping 12 times, or a trip to the moon and change, all in our beautiful city!
It has not only been a joy to see your enthusiasm for sustainable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly travel, but to witness The City of Tampa’s commitment to creating a safe environment for cyclists on our streets, too.
Under Mayor Buckhorn’s administration, the City has completed the Riverwalk, the Selmon Greenway, the Courtney Campbell Causeway Trail, Cass Street’s two-way bike track (the first two-way signalized cycle track on a two-way street in Florida!), and over 100 miles of bike infrastructure improvements. This has all contributed to Tampa’s recent designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community at the Bronze level.
As Coast Bike Share continues to grow in Tampa, we’re getting ready to do it all over again across the bay in St. Petersburg. Blue bikes will be hitting the The Burg soon with a full Coast Bike Share system set to be launched in the New Year!
Before skipping off for birthday party fun, all of us at Coast would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has made the bike share scheme such a success in Tampa.
There’s so much more to come and we can’t wait.
We’ll be back a little later with a couple of special anniversary competitions so keep your eyes peeled. But for now: CAKE.
