Coast Bike Share reaches major milestone: 100,000 trips

Tampa, Fla. (November 21, 2016) – 100,000 trips, and rolling. Coast Bike Share reached the major milestone Friday afternoon with a ride from Curtis Hixon Park to  MacDill Park in Tampa. This comes just two days after the City of Tampa was designated a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

The program reached the 100,000 mile mark after ten months of operation and the second year of operations has seen a significant rise in usage. Over the last month alone, the bikes have seen more than 500 miles per day on average and are forecast to reach the 300,000 mile mark just prior to the end of the year.

It’s unsurprising that Curtis Hixon remains the busiest station, followed by Sail Pavilion and Waterworks Park. In St. Petersburg, hubs that show early promise include the Vinoy hub along Bayshore Drive, the EDGE District hub at the roundabout on Central Avenue and 11th Street, and the location adjacent to Avenue Eat/Drink on 1st Avenue- South and 3rd Street.

The program fully launched in Tampa on December 6th, 2014 with 300 bikes across 30 stations and has recently expanded to St. Petersburg. Coast St. Pete launched a 100 bicycle demo fleet across 10 stations on November 1, 2016. The full 300 bike program, including 30 stations, is expected to launch in St. Petersburg after the new year bringing Coast Bikes to a total of 600 bikes and 60+ stations across Tampa Bay.

Total ridership statistics to date are as follows:

  • Trips 100,699
  • Miles 281,472
  • Unique Riders: 28,606
  • Carbon reduced 248,207 lbs
  • Calories burned 11,258,892
  • Money saved when compared to driving $163,253

Coast St. Pete, 20 days into its demo launch, has already surpassed 2,000 miles across nearly 1,000 trips.
